A Flower In Winter

I really enjoyed this book. The story is heart-wrenching, well researched and beautifully told and the writing draws you along, I was gripped from the first page. Set in the days leading up to the evacuation of Dunkirk (in which my own father was involved), it was totally believable. The humanity and bravery of the characters was well-drawn, especially the old Dutchmen and the young British officer. Can't recommend too highly!

A Flower In Winter

A Flower in Winter by David James is a gripping story following the escape of Sam, a young Jewish boy, from war torn Holland. It’s dramatic and tense description of the Nazi invasion make compelling reading - you feel like you are a member of the crew taking the journey with Sam. A master of detail, David James has obviously researched vastly to set the fictional story in a historically accurate setting. How refreshing to have a style of writing which draws you back into the era with such authenticity. Be prepared to get your tissues ready for parts of the ride. I can’t wait for the sequel!

David has researched his subject very well. The thread of the story takes the reader alongside each character has history evolves in the Second World War. Events are interwoven with personal stories and how these affect those characters and those around them. Well written and a very good and interesting read

This is a very moving story that stays with you, and is especially poignant when you discover the sharp-edged reality that inspired it. With his careful, detailed descriptions, particularly of the characters' movements and surroundings, this author has a gift for bringing a scene vividly to the mind's eye. I much enjoyed reading this well researched debut novel and look forward to the next!

A Flower In Winter

Easy to read, historically important, with very sensitive character studies, this book leads you through their lives as they and you experience the reality of the disaster that is war. Many cups of engineers' tea later you are filled with terribleness of loss and the of the love that humanity is full of. I enjoyed the journey, the details and found that it was ended too quickly.

A Flower In Winter

A superb first novel based upon true stories of a relatively unknown aspect of WW2. A gripping narrative and poignant portrayal of the cruelties and tragedy of anti semitism and so many lives blighted. The young of today need to know this history. A great work.

This book is superbly written. Incredible amount of research has obviously been undertaken. It's unusual for such a book to be an easy read - but it is! When I'd finished I felt like I had been absorbed into a first class film. Highly recommended!

Out Of The Depths

A very readable book, based on the firm foundations of the first novel. David captures the essence of the West of Cornwall beautifully, coupled with the intricacies of relationships across families, war-torn countries and faiths. Some beautiful descriptive text, with a very human set of stories. Congratulations

David "I gave my wife your two books for Christmas and she loved them! I then read them and I was enthralled too. So well done, they are great stories, very well told. We both hope you're working on the next one!
